Judgement: Not Recommended

I'm torn.
It has potential, and on sale it's really very cheap, which would leave me inclined to tentatively give this a just-about-recommended... But it's been 7 months since release with no updates, and they are sorely needed. It *very much* feels like an early access game. The basic systems are functional, and it's quite fun, but also lacking polish and balance, and crying out for some more variety.
The visuals are problematic. Strategic movement is fairly fundamental in a survivors-like such as this, but that requires clarity - which is sorely lacking. At lower levels, you have many large structures which substantially obscure your view, and the points at which you can navigate through them are rarely clear. But this is only a minor annoyance, it soon gets worse; the steadily intensifying weaponry of you and your enemies mean the screen is routinely flooded with effects, which obscure the minimal visual cues to let you avoid attacks, and make it harder and harder to identify any pickups you might need to prioritise.
Speaking of those pickups, this general lack of clarity extends to a total absence of any explanation as to what they actually are, or what the multitude of stat bars represent, or even what purpose is served by some seemingly key game items (such as antimatter).
Progression also feels stilted, especially considering that you have to start from scratch with each new mech. On top of that, the fact that there is only 1 level in the game (which is misrepresented by the menu suggesting that level 2 is just waiting for you to "unlock" it) means it quickly starts to feel very grindy.
Finally, a minor point but one which irks me - I find it really odd that we are supposed to be "defending the city" - but the skyscrapers only exist to be destroyed, and you are rewarded for doing so. It doesn't feel very heroic!
All in all, I have to come down as "not recommended" - but I hope that can change in the future.
